MyChart Terms and Conditions of Use

Please read the terms and conditions entirely and carefully before using MyChart. These terms and conditions are subject to change without prior written notice at any time, and at the discretion of BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine.

BJC HealthCare ("BJC") and Washington University School of Medicine ("WUSM") are pleased to offer you access to a web-based service called "MyChart." MyChart provides you with convenient access to select portions of your medical record. The service may also allow you to designate other people (each called a "proxy") to have access to these select portions of your medical record and/or other service options (referred to in this document as "proxy access"). The information available through MyChart may come from many sources including, but not necessarily limited to, inpatient information, outpatient information, clinic information, laboratory data, retail pharmacy records, radiology/imaging test results and/or any other information or data permissibly received from BJC, WUSM, and non-affiliated health care providers.

This service may also offer you or your designated proxy(ies) a method of online communication with your health care providers who choose to communicate electronically via MyChart and their practice staff for activities such as prescription renewals, appointment scheduling and online messaging. BJC and WUSM do not represent or guarantee that any certain health care providers will choose to communicate in this manner or shall continue to communicate in this manner. Discuss these choices with your health care provider(s). In addition, each health care provider chooses how to set-up its method and distribution of such communications.

Although you may have access to a variety of records (i.e., laboratory and imaging test results) through the MyChart services, not all of the health care providers who have ordered these tests may be accepting electronic communications via the MyChart website (also referred to as the "site"). Therefore, while you may securely communicate with health care providers participating in the electronic communication service offered via MyChart, you might not be able to communicate in that manner with all of your health care providers. You should contact non-participating health care providers in the manner you currently do. Also, ask your primary care doctor, specialist(s) and the ordering/consulting physician(s) about whom to contact with questions or concerns about your test results, the meaning/interpretations of those results and any follow-up care.

We think it is important for you to know how we permit access and manage information via the internet. These Terms and Conditions generally outline our practices and commitment to your privacy. We reserve the right and discretion to revoke access to this service at any time or make changes to our processes and procedures and/or these Terms and Conditions.

BJC and WUSM provide these services and this website solely as a health information resource to be accessed at your convenience. This site is not an attempt to practice medicine or provide specific medical advice. This website should not be used as a substitute for the advice of your personal healthcare provider(s). You should not rely upon the MyChart site if you have immediate health concerns or questions.

You and your proxy(ies) assume full responsibility for using the information on this site, and you understand and agree that BJC, WUSM, and their affiliates are not responsible for any claim, loss, or damage resulting from its use or inability to use this site by you or any user. While we try to keep the information on the site as accurate as possible, we cannot guarantee its accuracy, timeliness or completeness; nor can we guarantee that access to the site will be error - or virus-free or uninterrupted. In addition, for some information and records, an automatic delay may be built into the system to allow your health care provider(s) to do things such as review your results, verify your results, contact you to discuss your results, or other professional activities that the health care provider (s) deem clinically appropriate. Please note: Some test results normally take longer to produce than others, so this means some types of tests will not be available as quickly as other tests.

Response to Electronic Communication

Health care provider(s) participating in the electronic messaging component of MyChart should use normal efforts to respond to your electronic inquiries. In some cases, the clinic staff who need to respond to an electronic communication may not be immediately available. Therefore, patients should generally expect a response to take two (2) or more business days. Accordingly, emergency situations requiring immediate attention should not be submitted electronically. You should call 911 for any emergencies. Also, if you have a non-emergency issue that requires more prompt attention, please call your health care provider or go to the emergency room of a hospital. You should discuss communication time frames and expectations directly with your health care provider. Furthermore, with respect to any electronic communication sent by or on behalf of the patient, your health care provider(s) may only be able to respond to such communications based on the information provided. If there is insufficient information provided, they may be unable to provide accurate and reliable responses/services and/or may request more information or clarification, which may cause delays.

By using MyChart for electronic communications with your health care provider(s) who choose to participate in MyChart, you hereby acknowledge and agree that BJC and WUSM are in no way responsible or liable to store, manage or transmit any electronic communications beyond a thirty (30) day period. It is your responsibility and your provider's responsibility to receive, capture, download and/or otherwise retain any such electronic communication that you or your provider feels is important to your care or to your treatment relationship. You and your provider hereby release BJC and WUSM from any and all claims related to the storage, availability or destruction of any message or electronic communication (including audit trail data) beyond this thirty (30) day period. Finally, you acknowledge and agree that BJC and WUSM may use any reasonable method of deletion or destruction of such message or electronic communication that it deems proper.

Website Links

MyChart may offer links to other websites or resources, including related websites and resources not managed by BJC or WUSM. These website links are solely intended for information and reference purposes only. BJC and WUSM do not endorse and have not verified the accuracy of the information in/on these websites. Neither you nor your providers should rely solely on any of the information found on such websites for purposes of treatment or diagnosis. Please be aware that the privacy policies of these websites may significantly differ from the privacy policies of BJC and WUSM. BJC and WUSM are not responsible for the privacy practices of such other websites. We encourage you to be aware when you leave MyChart and to read all third-party policies before using their website.

Due to certain federal and state laws regarding minors and/or due to the technical limitations of the MyChart service, not all test results, medical records, or other reports may be made available via this service. If you think something is missing or inaccurate, you should contact your healthcare provider directly.

Minor Eligibility

Minor children 12 years of age through 17 years of age (inclusive) will be eligible to participate in the MyChart services. A minor's parent or guardian will only have access to the MyChart account of his/her minor in the following, limited circumstances: (1) when the minor's physician reasonably believes that the minor lacks capacity to consent/participate in the MyChart process; and (2) when the health care needs of the minor are so complex that the minor's physician believes it is appropriate for both the parent and the minor to have full access to the minor's MyChart account. However, under State and Federal law, there are certain types of health information that the parent or guardian of a minor may not view without the consent of the minor, and therefore, the minor and the minor's physician must give their written consent before the parent or guardian will have access to such information. A minor may revoke a proxy's access at any time via the minor's MyChart account.

Email Privacy

Users of MyChart will generally be notified via email when there is new or modified information to be viewed on MyChart, including medical, billing, and scheduling information. This means that any person with access to a patient's email account will be able to see this notification including your proxy(ies). This could include the patient's spouse, child(ren), employer or anyone else who can access the patient's email account. Although no specific information will be sent in the notification, the notification of new information being available by accessing MyChart may be information that a patient would not want others to know. Thus, patients should take this into account when providing or changing the email address on file with MyChart.

Please know that if you send an email communication via the MyChart services to your health care provider, it may be shared with or used by individuals that assist your health care provider in rendering or coordinating your health care. A patient's medical information available through MyChart will be accessible to staff members designated by your health care provider. The ways in which such information may be accessed, used or disclosed should be set forth in such provider's HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices. Security and Confidentiality

BJC and WUSM are committed to protecting the confidentiality of your medical information. Standard security measures, such as firewalls, passwords, encryption, and audit trails, are used to safeguard your information. We track the time and date of access to records each time a patient account is accessed through MyChart. We have taken steps to secure all such information against unauthorized access, use, and release.

In general, you must access MyChart with a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) compatible browser or terminal (Internet Explorer version 7.0 or later or Mozilla Firefox version 3.0 or later). These requirements may change over time. Our SSL web server uses authentication and offers current industry-accepted security methods. We utilize physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to promote the prevention and detection of unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure authorized use and disclosure of information. We allow access to the information only to those employees, clinical providers, contractors, and service and equipment providers who need such access in connection with providing services to you, to us or on our behalf. If you become aware of any actual or suspected unauthorized use or disclosure of your information via these services, you should immediately contact us.

You can generally tell when you are using a secure site by looking at the location (URL) field. If the URL begins with https:// (instead of http://), the document/link should come from a secure server. This means your data cannot be read or deciphered by unauthorized individuals. Further verification can be done by viewing the site's SSL certificate (the process for this varies depending on which browser you are using) and verifying that the certificate is verified by a trusted root certificate authority.

Your account information and profile are password protected. User names and passwords provide two layers of security and authentication. These user names and passwords are stored by BJC and WUSM in an encrypted database that is separately kept from the internet. As a MyChart user, your role in maintaining the security of your medical information is critically important. You should always:

  1. Use a strong password. A strong password is typically considered one that has the following attributes: It has a lengthy (8 characters or more) combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers, and special characters; and it does not contain and is not derived from words, names, or other common or easily guessed combinations (i.e., birth date).

  2. Change your password on a regular basis (every 90 days is a widely accepted security recommendation).

  3. Keep your login ID and password strictly confidential.

You should not share your password with anyone (even your designated proxy(ies)). Each proxy you designate will have a separate, individual, and unique identification code and password. You will be able to delete or modify proxy access when desired, by either: 1) contacting your health care provider that registered you into MyChart; or 2) when available, managing your MyChart account online. We will never ask you for your password in an unsolicited phone call or in an unsolicited email. You should sign out of your account and close your browser window when you have finished your session, so others cannot access your personal information. This is especially important if you share a computer with someone else or use a computer in a public place. You should be cautious in using the "Remember My Password" or "Remember Me" function on your computer or web browser. These functions may compromise the secure or confidential nature of your information, especially if you are using a computer shared by more than one person. If you become aware of any actual or suspected unauthorized use or disclosure of your information or your user name or password, you should immediately contact us.

Although we use these security safeguards in providing access to these services, other data transmission methods over the internet or via a wireless network may not be as secure. You should always be cautious in your use of unsecured, unknown, or suspicious networks, wireless access points, and/or websites, especially if such use includes the transmission of personal, confidential, or private information (such as health or medical information, financial information, etc). Whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information online (for example on message boards, through email, blogs, or in chat areas), that information can be collected and used by others. Please carefully consider if/when/where to disclose such personal information. Additionally, if you print out your medical records and misplace or lose them, then that information may not be private information anymore.

Although we take diligent effort to preserve your privacy and the confidentiality of your information, we may need to disclose personal information when we have a good faith belief such action is required by law or is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order, or legal process.

If you have any questions about our privacy statement, the practices of this Internet site, or are concerned that we are not following any part of our published Privacy Policy, please contact the MyChart Patient Support team at 314-273-1966 or toll-free at 866-273-1966. Or, by email at

  2. Inappropriate use of messaging or scheduling (ex: excessive, unnecessary, inappropriate content).

  3. Violation of security standards or any provision of these Terms and Conditions.

  4. Inability to use features without repetitive or continued assistance.

  5. To protect you or your information from suspicious activity or other known or suspected security concerns.

  6. To protect others or others' information from suspicious activity or other known or suspected security concerns.

  7. To protect BJC and WUSM, their systems, or their information from suspicious activity or other known or suspected security concerns.

Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but it is possible to change your browser setup so that it does not accept cookies. However, rejecting cookies may prevent you from taking advantage of certain portions of MyChart.

MyChart allows certain electronic applications to access several types of health information within your MyChart account. If you choose to use any such application, the application will prompt you to enter your MyChart username and password before MyChart loads your health information to your selected electronic application (e.g., a mobile phone application designed to assist in your wellbeing).
